The purpose of Artwork in Interiors

Humans have been using art to express creativity since the beginning of civilisation. Art is a reflection of ourselves and the world we live in, and it can be used to evoke emotion and capture a moment in time. It can be used to brighten up a space, create a conversation piece, or simply to give a room an extra dimension.

The purpose of real art in a home has meaning. It is not just another decorative item. It plays many roles, creating a focal point within a space, hold a personal meaning or a memory that consequently gives meaning to the space, it can embody a design style, a mood or a concept, it can be the one piece that brings your entire home together, and it makes the space beautiful.

For many people, a certain piece of artwork is often an important possession to display in the home because it can have meaning or contain a memory and feelings that they are reminded of in the presence of the artwork.

The difference between real artwork and accessories

To use artwork correctly in your home and give it the importance it deserves, you must understand art and be able to distinguish it from an accessory.

An accessory is purely a decorative item, with the sole purpose of making a space more beautiful. It carries no meaning. In fact, it is distinguished from artwork because has a function; to add texture, pattern, height, form, ...which often pulls a design scheme together.

Art is creative work, imaginative talent expressing beauty or conceptual ideas. It is intended to be appreciated as beautiful, or contemplated for the message it contains, or the meaning it conveys. It can evoke emotion, inspire you, or provoke curiosity and excitement.

The best advice I can give you as a designer is not to fall into the decorator’s trap of adding decorative pictures that are really just place fillers. These types of artwork of course have their place and are useful and fun, but become boring to look at very quickly after some years.

When we understand what we are selecting, we select artwork of lasting value.

Understand the ark market and the tiers

All artists are categorised into tiers based on their reputation, their recognition, as well as their education. A tiered market reflects the difference between emerging artists and established ones. They go from tier 1 to 4.

Tier 1 artists are those with major reputations. They are globally recognised. These art pieces are considered priceless and cannot be purchased. You find them in museums and galleries.

Artists in Tier 2 are well established and reputable. Their art pieces are quite costly, and can range from several thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. They are sold via auctions, commercial galleries, and smaller art galleries. Many collectors, investors, and high-end clients who have a certain love for art purchase them from this tier.

In the 3rd Tier you’ll find emerging artists. They are usually self taught. Their art pieces can be found online. The artwork from this tier can range from several hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Hobby artists belong to Tier 4, they are relatively unknown, and have their pieces sold online, or at local markets stalls. These usually cost a couple of hundreds of dollars.

As Designers, we mainly source artwork for our clients from tiers 2 and 3 to ensure both quality and value. Remember that it does not mean that unknown artists are bad, but rather, the concept of good or bad art is relative to whether that artwork is a good investment or not to someone who considers themselves to be a collector.

On commissioning Art

A specially commissioned work for art always involves some element of risk since there is no sure way to predict how the end result will actually look in the space until it is complete. Commissions are usually based on the artist's reputation. They may be executed on-site or when the scale and medium allow, in the artist's studio, and delivered to the location and installed.

Artwork holds a profound significance in our homes, extending beyond mere decoration. It possesses the power to convey emotions, serve as focal points, and infuse meaning into our living spaces. By understanding the purpose and impact of art, we can make informed choices when selecting pieces for our homes. Avoid falling into the trap of using generic placeholders; instead, invest in artwork that resonates with you on a deeper level.

Explore different artists, styles, and mediums to find pieces that evoke emotions and create conversations. Let art be the vibrant centre-piece that breathes life into your living space, making it truly unique and reflective of your personal taste and style.

Remember, art is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating an emotional connection and bringing your home to life. Embrace the beauty of art and let it become an integral part of your home's story.
